I've tried to be as concise as possible—there’s everything that you need and nothing that you don’t.

bought this because the intro hints that it will provide visa information. But it doesn't so very bummed. Probably worth the small price anyway, but... Also this is written for regular Americans who've never taught before. So far I haven't found anything for those of us who are professional degreed ESL teachers... His blog is helpful tho... so, as my three stars show, I'm ambivalent. Just take out your hints that you're going to tell me how to get a blasted visa so it's legal to teach, OR tell me how please?!Product details

Great read good stories Excellent book. Lot of good info want,s you go to Rome to teach !,,, good value
I bought this book a few hours ago and haven't put my kindle down since, it's excellent and practical advice. I've travelled to Rome 12 times in the past few years for mini breaks and I'm hoping that trip number 13 will involve a big move! I'm planning to work as a lawyer in Rome eventually but plan to work as an English teacher for first year so I can learn Italian. Rick's advice is very honest, practical and makes the idea of moving countries a lot less daunting.
Rick's done a pretty good job of writing here. The only reason I'm not giving him 5 stars is that I feel it would have been in his (and his readers') best interests to expand the book a bit. I mean, if you're going to write about something as complex and exciting as Italy, let alone ROME, it CANNOT be just a 30-minute read. Maybe I'm a little biased because I have spent a lot of time in Italy over the years or maybe Ol' Rick was just greasin' us up for his other Italian literary musings, but seriously, the book is worth a read whether you are seriously contemplating a job teaching English in Italy or just contemplating it.
Rick Zullo is an American who lives in Rome, Italy. He tells you about his experience as a person teaching English to Italian citizens. He also tells you about the wonders of living in Rome, and gives you tons of practical information about modern Italy, including choosing a restaurant, finding an apartment, paying bills, and using the Italian transportation system. I read this as an American who went to school in Northern Italy. This novel is very well written, easy to read, and a lot of fun. It is practical and insightful. Mr. Zullo is a fine writer with great experience.
I would recommend this to anyone wanting to visit Italy. It is a great guide, even if you don't want to work there, because it tells us about Italian life and how we Americans differ from Italians. It is easy reading for kids and adults.
What a fantastic guide for Americans dreaming of moving to Italy!
I have been considering making a move to Europe for a while, having gained Italian dual citizenship recently. But, I thought I would initially be limited to English speaking countries in the EU like the United Kingdom or Ireland until I learned the culture and gained some other language skills (or new friends to help with the language barrier) before I could land employment in Italy.
It is very daunting to think about moving to another country where you don't speak the language. This book helps walk you through what you can expect as an American moving to Rome with a step by step guide on the months leading up to your move, the first few days in Rome and getting settled (if you intend to stay for a while). But most importantly, it provided me with the confidence that I could make a direct move from America to Rome and survive it! There are tons of great resources referenced in this book from how to create a European resume (CV), making initial contacts for English teaching jobs, and the differences to expect from American life to life in Rome.
I am now in process of planning for my English teaching adventure in Rome!
Before I read this book (which I grabbed on early this morning) I hadn't even considered going to Italy - and especially not as an English teacher. But after reaching this guide, I was ready to pull out the suitcase, update my passport and start looking for a job!
The part that really grabbed me - and made me want to follow in the author's footsteps - was the chapter on Daily Life in Rome. Yes, I learned about the abbonamento mensile (bus pass) and hoped that I wouldn't run into a sciopero (strike)! But was got me was the section on Food Culture. I loved reading about the abdunance of great restaurants, wine bars, outdoor eating, and the true joy Italians find in seeking out food that's fresh, simple, and high quality. Sign me up!
I'm still reading, but was so jazzed about the thought of actually living in Rome inspired me to get on and leave this review. The author has covered all the bases - including other expats in Rome, apartment hunting, and finding a job. Great work!
Living in Rome has been a dream of mine for years and all of my research into the "how to" has left me with little practical information and a lot of confusion. What a stroke of good fortune to have found this author who has succeeded in fulfilling his dream and laid out precisely how to do it. I've read through this book twice. The first time I was absolutely amazed at the wealth of practical information like how to prepare for this adventure before I leave the States, what to do on arriving in Rome, how to find a place to live, where to go for a job as an English teacher, and how to be "legal" living in Italy. I read it the second time because his style of writing is absolutely captivating. You get a sense of actually being there and having him next to you leading you through the process! He obviously has a love of Rome and all things Italian! And you can tell that this is a person who wrote from his heart with the idea of encouraging anyone who has thought to do this, but has hesitated, to go ahead and just do it!. After finishing the book, I was so motivated that I signed up for an online TEFL course which I start next week and my plan is to be in Italy after the first of the year! Even if you have no intention to move to Rome, I recommend that you read this book for sheer enjoyment! I'm sure that you'll be entertained by his great anecdotes and offbeat sense of humor.
